Dynamic FX Sidechains RNS + combinators
Dynamic_FX_Sidechain_2.zip414.73 KBInstead of ducking an instrument directly, these duck the effects Aux Returns in time to the music. This is a great way to control your mix and tame your effects. It also allows you to use over-the-top effects without overwhelming the mix.
4 Effect Sidechain Combinators:
This RNS song contains 4 individual sidechain combinator Effects prewired to the mixer Returns:
- RV7000 Sidechain (Reverb)
- DDL-1 Sidechain (Delay)
- CF-101 Sidechain (Chorus)
- Effect Sidechain (use with any external effect, i.e. Combinator F/X)
I made 3 effects combinators, plus one to be used with any external effect (connect using built-in spider). Each contains a Sidechain Compressor that is designed to duck the Aux Return only, using a drum beat as the trigger.
When you do enable Compressor ON, you'll be ducking the effects Aux Return using drum beats (or any source).
Having this premade in a combinator saves the hassle of having to set it up. You can swap in new effect units to suit.

- Press play. Listen to the reverb as it is ducked rhythmically.
- Mute Mixer Chan. 2 to hear the effect more clearly without the drum beats.
- Toggle Compressor ON button to hear it with/without the effect.
Drum beats are routed from the Redrum via Spider Audio to the compressor's Sidechain In. When the bass drums trigger the sidechain, it ducks the Aux Return of the reverb in time with the music, as controlled by the compressor's Release time. Adjust the Release time to match the beat of your song. The Attack is set fast to trigger properly. All other compressor settings can be adjusted to suit.
