Wendy's FilterD Chorus

Written by Wendy Dunham.

chorus

This is a variation of the Reason FSB FilterD Chorus combinator, which is a Thor chorus with filter controls. I really like how the filter controls contour the chorus sound and can really beef it up. But I felt it needed a rotary Chorus Speed (rate) control, rather than just a button with only two speeds. True, you can also adjust Chorus Speed with the Mod Wheel, but then you have to record that parameter to a track to set it. So I made this variation with a new backdrop.

chorus-controlsWhat's New: I removed the original Self Resonance button and Resonance rotary (wasn't getting a lot of use out of those). I added a new Chorus Speed (Rotary 3) for full rate control, as well as a new Filter Mod (Button 1) for a subtle filter vibrato. As before, changing the Filter Freq and LP/HP changes the tone of the chorus. (Filter controls only work when Filter Enable is on).

User Controls:
  • Filter Freq: changes frequency of the State Variable Filter.
  • Filter Mod: enables modulation (vibrato) of the filter Frequency. Tempo Synced Rate = 3/16.
  • LP HP: adjusts the Notch filter from low pass to high pass.
  • Filter Enable: enables filter and above controls (Rotary 1, Rotary 2 and Button 1).
  • Chorus Speed: adds additional speed to the Mod Rate set by the Chorus Lo/Hi button.
  • Chorus Lo/Hi1: sets Chorus Mod Rate starting value. (disabled = 0.25 Hz / enabled = 2.50 Hz).
  • Dry Wet: (Rotary 4)
  • Chorus Mod: changes Chorus Mod Amt. (disabled = 5 / enabled = 29).
Performance Controls:
Mod Wheel also increases Chorus Speed, just like Rotary 3.
Pitch Bend changes Chorus Feedback.
1 Chorus Lo/Hi button controls the chorus Mod Rate starting value (disabled = 0.25 Hz / enabled = 2.50 Hz). If you enable it, you may wish to lower the Chorus Speed first or it might sound crazy, because the rotary speed is added to the button speed via the Mod Matrix. The button only has two Mod Rates, but since I added a rotary for full Chorus Speed, it is no longer really needed. I left it in due to the way the original Mod Matrix was programmed, and as an alternative speed switch. Basically, you could leave it off, and instead use the Chorus Speed rotary. If you do enable it, you can reach even higher and crazier speeds. Hope this makes sense!
